A performance improvement plan (PIP) is a tool used to by an employer to assist those employees who are under performing in their respective given tasks. Through this plan, the employee corrects the issues in their work where they are lacking in implementation. A supervisor has the job to create a performance improvement plan to hand to an employee before any serious actions are taken.
Here is how a performance improvement plan is laid out:
- Use your words to talk to the employee on their issues.
- Be clear and precise on these issues, but be kind in your tone.
- Let them know about your expectations and that you need to see a change soon.
- Make sure you understand that this person was hired by your for some reason or quality you saw in them. Remind them of that special capability they have.
- Be a mentor in the plan and guide them on what you are expecting and need for your business.
- Give them a timeline to show improvement and get the document signed.
