The rack and pinion systems of a vehicle are placed at the bottom side of the frame or on the topside of the rear between the transmission and firewall. To remove the rack and pinion, make the wheels face straight and the steering should be in place.
Things you will need
- Jack stands
- Floor jack
- ½-inch air gun
- Wrenches
- Hammer
- Wire cutter
- Sockets
- Tie rod remover tool
Instructions
- Raise the vehicle on the jack stands and remove the front wheels with the air gun and socket.
- Remove the steering coupler located under the dash, by lifting the boot near the firewall and unscrewing the bolts there.
- Remove the power steering lines with a wrench. You will have to remove the cotter pin from the tie rod ends with a wire cutter.
- Now insert the tie rod removal tool between the tie rod and the spindle. Hit it with a hammer.
- Remove the rack by unscrewing the bolts. You will need a socket and ratchet for this.
- After you remove the rack, loosen the A-frame that holds the engine and transmission. Loosen one bolt at a time. Loosen all four bolts at the driver’s front frame and install the new rack.
