Car seats can wear down after a few years, and it is mainly the springs that are the most affected. They can get bent, broken, or damaged by excessive use. Car seats do not have to be fully replaced, but in fact, the damaged springs can be replaced and the seat will be fully renewed. Here is a look on how car seat springs can be mended and replaced.
- Remove the seat of the car by loosening the bolts. You can do this by holding the seat down to the car’s floor with the help of a wrench.
- Place the seat upside down so that you can speculate its damages.
- Rip the material covering the bottom so that the springs are revealed under it.
- If the springs are bent, you can rebend the wires with pliers to match the old shape again, just like the other fixed springs are.
- If the springs are damaged and broken, cut them with a wire cutter, and cut off the threaded side.
- With a reamer, drill out the bit so a hollow is formed. Drill it just enough from the center so that it fits the broken ends of the springs.
- Now slip wire’s broken ends in the two sides of the drill bit you have hollowed. With the soldering iron, solder the spring to the bit.
- Wrap safety wire around all the springs so that the springs are stabilized. Use a duct tape to keep the safety wire in place with the bit.
- Replace the bottom of the seat by stapling the fabric.
- Place the car seat back and connect the bolts.
