While grooming your garden, you may end up cutting an unwanted tree that has been in the way. But what you will end up with is an unsightly remainder of its trunk – which is the stump. The roots of that cut tree begin to die shortly and then they will eventually decay. The time you spent in decorating your garden will be wasted if you don’t know how to get rid of this tree stump. And removing a stump can be a tedious task when you have no clue of how to take it out.

First, check the size of the stump. If it’s not as big and can be dug out, grab a shovel and start digging a trench around it. Try to expose as many roots in the process. If the roots are loose and small too, you can use an axe of a circular saw to cut them though. Shallow roots like those of willows and maples are easy to cut. Now, with the help of a pick axe, loosen the soil that is left around the stump. The stump will become loose once you have worked all around it.

Then, fill the holes with kerosene oil (you can also use fuel oil). Once the oil soaks completely, light a match in each of the holes. If you want to do it in a professional manner, visit a gardens center and buy the chemical product that is specially designed to speed up the decomposing process of the stump. These products have a high content of nitrogen, which enhances the production of bacterial growth for its decomposition. You have to drill holes in the stump, fill the chemical product in these holes, and leave fore a few weeks. Gradually, the stump will become soft like a sponge, which you can then easily remove with the help of an axe.
A mechanical method for the stump to be removed is with a tree stump grinder. This grinder consists of a circular cutting blade that eats or grinds on the stump and breaks it into chips of wood. You will need to wear gloves, goggles, and ear protectors when using this method. Grinders can be rented from gardening shops or machine rental houses.
