The quickest and best way to have a beautiful lawn is by laying sod. Laying sod will create and instant and lush lawn, especially when your sparse and barren backyard needs a quick and easy renewal. You can lay sod yourself in your lawn with this helpful and simple guide.
Materials needed
- Topsoil
- Sharp knife
- Sod
- Tiller
- Rake and broom
- Garden hose
- All-purpose granular fertilizer
- Lawn roller
- Light-weight lawn mower
- Spade
Instructions
- Prepare the soil first for a fast and deep-rooting process. The prepared soil provides nutrients to the freshly laid soil as well. You will add a good quality top soil to the already existing soil so as to promote the growth of the grass. The, turn the soil very loosely, keeping it to a depth of 4-6 inches. Use a garden fork for this.
- Clear the soil from any sticks, weeds, or stones. Rake the soil to remove heavily clogged soil. Also pull out the debris and push it to the side to dispose it off.
- Walk over the soil to compact it. Walk over it horizontally and then perpendicularly to compact the ground further.
- With the rake, produce a fine till over the soil. Ensure the surface is leveled.
- Water the prepared surface for 3 days before the sod is laid. This is done to provide enough moisture to make the sod root quickly and aid the soil to settle.
- Apply a liberal amount of fertilizer to the soil to provide it with nutrients immediately before laying the sod.
- Lay the sod now by beginning it at a straight edge of the soil. Continue till a single row is complete. The individual strips of sod should be close to one another, but should not overlap. Lay layer next to another in a second line with a half cut so as to promote a stronger bonding when the sod roots in the soil. For the third line, make a full cut of the sod, and continue repeating this pattern then.
- With a drum roller, press the sod into the soil now so that all air spaces are removed too. The roots will get into the soil this way as well.
- Sprinkle water over the sod after 30 minutes of laying it.
- Trim with a lawn mower if the grass is too tall.
